Sydney Stock Exchange
The Sydney Stock Exchange is part of the larger Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). The Sydney part of the ASX used to be called The Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE) however in 2006 the SFE merged with the Australian Stock Exchange. The result is the Australian Securities Exchange, still known as the ASX.
The ASX is where Australian stock exchange takes place. It runs an all electronic trading program. Some of the largest stocks which are traded on the Australia Securities Exchange are those from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, ANZ Bank, Telstra and BHP Billiton. Financial services are the largest sector represented on the ASX.
The Managing Director of the Sydney Stock Exchange / Australian Futures Exchange is Robert Elstone who was also the CEO of the Sydney Futures Exchange before it merged with the ASX in 2006.
The ASX is regulated by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) as it can not regulate itself as it does with other companies which are listed on the ASX. The ASX is itself a public company with its stock listed on the ASX itself.
The major market index on the Sydney Stock Exchange is the ASX 200. This is made of up the top 200 shares which are on the ASX which also runs in parallel to the All Ordinaries Index. Other indices include the ASX 100 and ASX 50.
